Henderson Creek

Community Waitakere Charitable Trust has managed the contract for Henderson Creek for six years and have just completed the first year of our Aftercare contract.

Together with the community we have planted over 100,000 trees and undertaken other restoration activities along the our section of the creek. Our work begins on the Lower Opanuku and Oratia streams where they pass under the Great North Road in Henderson, through their connection at Delta Point in Cranwell Park where they become Henderson Creek, until the creek flows out under the northwestern motorway bridge in Te Atatu. There is a wonderful walk/cycleway which runs along the length of the east side of the creek.

The tidal nature of Henderson Creek provides a wonderful educational opportunity for our groups as the nature of the stream is constantly changing with the mixing of salt water from the harbour with fresh water from the Opanuku and Oratia Streams. Henderson Creek is an important migratory route for many native fish, such as the adult banded kokapu and inanga, who spend most of their time in the upper streams but breed in the estuaries.

The Team
